Here at Dean Watson, we spend our time creating bespoke furniture that brings both beauty and function into the home. One of the most popular requests I receive these days is for a custom media wall. It’s a brilliant way to blend technology seamlessly into your décor, but a question we often hear is “Where should I put it?”
You may have an idea of where you want to place your new media wall, but the truth is, a bespoke media wall can be designed for almost any area in your house. The location can also dictate the design, the materials, and the clever joinery tricks we use to make it perfect.
Let’s explore the four most popular spots for a media wall and what you need to consider for each.
Living Room
The living room is the traditional heart of the home, and naturally, it’s the most common place for a media wall. Here, the media wall isn’t just a functional piece; it can become the focal point of the entire room.
Design Focus: Seamless integration and aesthetic impact.
When designing a living room media wall, my team and I focus on creating a piece that complements the existing décor. We use custom joinery to ensure the unit fits perfectly from floor to ceiling and wall to wall, giving it a built-in, architectural feel.
- Focal Point: The design should draw the eye, even when the television is off. We often achieve this with contrasting materials, such as a beautiful natural wood veneer for the base cabinetry paired with a textured stone or fabric panelling around the screen.
- Cable Management: In a high-traffic area like the living room, visible cables are a no-go. We build in discreet channels and conduits to hide every wire, ensuring a clean, sophisticated look.
- Storage and Display: This space needs to balance open shelving for displaying cherished items with concealed storage for keeping clutter, like gaming consoles and remote controls, out of sight.
Bedroom
The bedroom is a space for relaxation. Here, the design should be more subtle and focused on comfort and discretion. Media walls are commonly placed towards the foot of the bed so you can watch TV without shifting to awkward angles.
It’s always handy to have extra storage space, so adding wardrobes and cupboards to your bedroom media wall cabinet can make excellent use of the room.
Design Focus: Discretion, comfort, and minimal visual intrusion.
The last thing you want in a bedroom is a large, black screen dominating the space when you’re trying to unwind. This is where clever carpentry solutions come into play.
- Concealment is Key: For the ultimate in luxury, we can install panels that hide the screen completely within a custom cabinet at the foot of the bed, or use sliding panels that cover the screen when not in use.
- Ambient Lighting: We integrate soft, dimmable LED backlighting into the wall unit. This provides a gentle glow for late-night viewing that reduces eye strain and sets a calming mood, without the harshness of overhead lights.
- Ergonomics: The viewing angle must be perfect from the bed. We ensure the TV is mounted at the correct height and often use adjustable mounts that allow the screen to be tilted for optimal comfort.
Kitchen
While less common, a media wall in the kitchen is becoming increasingly popular, especially in open-plan living spaces. Here, the media wall serves a more practical, multi-functional role, often blending entertainment with utility.
Design Focus: Durability, utility, and seamless blend with kitchen cabinetry.
The kitchen environment can be tough. It involves heat, steam, and moisture, so the choice of materials is paramount.
- Material Durability: We use robust, moisture-resistant materials and finishes that can withstand the kitchen environment. The media wall should look like a natural extension of your existing kitchen cabinetry, using the same colours, handles, and door styles.
- Integrated Smart Hubs: Instead of just a large TV, a kitchen media wall often incorporates smaller screens for recipes, smart home control panels, or charging stations for tablets. We build custom recesses for these devices to keep countertops clear.
- Viewing Angles: The screen needs to be visible from multiple points, whether you’re at the island, the dining table, or the hob. We design the placement to ensure a clear line of sight from the main working and social areas.

Media Room
The dedicated media room is where we can truly unleash our creativity and focus on performance. This space is designed specifically for an immersive experience, meaning the media wall must be optimised for acoustics and technology.
Design Focus: Performance, acoustics, and maximum immersion.
In a dedicated media room, the goal is to create a space that rivals a commercial cinema, but with the comfort and bespoke feel of your own home.
- Acoustic Treatment: We build custom wood panelling that is specifically designed to house acoustic materials. This isn’t just for looks; it’s essential for minimising echo and optimising the sound quality of your surround system.
- Equipment Housing: This room requires the most technology, so we design large, ventilated cabinets to house amplifiers, receivers, and all the necessary components. Ventilation is critical here to prevent overheating.
- Tiered Seating and Joinery: If you opt for tiered seating, we build the custom platforms and steps, ensuring they are sturdy, safe, and include integrated lighting for easy navigation in the dark. The entire room becomes a single, cohesive piece of joinery.
